June, 2019. The southeast part of British Columbia is Okanogan country. Within it lies Cathedral Provincial Park. Inside the park is an inner zone called the Core Area. It is laced with spectacular loop trails and lakes. Located in the Core Area is a private wilderness lodge. Access to to this area is gained by foot, horse or booking a ride with the lodge to transport you in and out. Getting the shuttle is highly recommended. You'll save lots of time due to the vertical gain and a very long hike. Mary and I visited this amazing park the second week Cathedral Lakes Lodge opened up for the season. We booked a ride on their shuttle to take us in and out and camped at Lake of the Woods campground. We had it pretty much to ourselves, except for goats that frequently visited. We hiked beautiful trails and had high country all to ourselves. The rim trail is spectacular! Be ready for anything. We got it all in our 4 days of June, including snow and hail. Just when one thinks it can turn sour, it can turn for the good. After a hike, you are welcome to the swing by the lodge and find a refreshing beverage. Tip > Avoid camping at Cathedral Lake. Everyone else does that. Hike another 30 minutes and it just gets better. For your last night out, book a meal at the lodge and treat yourself to something special. Folks running the lodge are fantastic. We had the pleasure of riding up personally with Richard who is the owner and enjoyed the rich history and stories he shared. Go early in the season and you will find plenty of room to roam the cabin without others. For wintertime fun, they are starting a heli bump ski touring operation - self guided. This will be a special place to make turns!
